New York Film Critics Circle Winners
Exciting news! Timothée will receive the Best Actor (Call Me by Your Name) award from the New York Film Critics Circle. Lady Bird has been named the Best Picture. Tim has been very busy this year, I apologize for the lack of news around here! We’ll be back on track soon.
‘Lady Bird’ Named Best Picture by New York Film Critics Circle
VARIETY – With its annual cinema superlatives vote Thursday morning, the New York Film Critics Circle made a handful of historical choices. “Call Me by Your Name” star Timothée Chalamet became the youngest winner of the group’s best actor prize, while “Mudbound” DP Rachel Morrison became the first woman to win the cinematography award (perhaps on her way to making further history as the first-ever female Oscar nominee in the category).

This year’s NYFCC ceremony, taking place on Jan. 3, will be dedicated to the memory of film critic Richard Schickel, who passed away in February.Best Actor: Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”)

“Call Me by Your Name” is a critical and box office triumph — but in a movie landscape that rarely represents a spectrum of male sexuality, there’s been plenty of analysis and even backlash for the rich, homosexual romance.
During TheWrap’s Q&A with stars Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet and director Luca Guadagnino, TheWrap’s Matt Donnelly asked how they deal with seemingly constant over-analysis of the film that won the Best Feature prize at the Gotham Independent Film Awards and had this year’s highest per theater average opening: Sometimes it’s too sexual, at other times it’s not sexual enough, according to observers. Others say it sexualizes someone too young, and some even brought Elio’s parents into the mix.

National Board of Review Awards Announced
VARIETY – The New York-based National Board of Review has crowned Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” the year’s best film as the Oscar season’s kudos circuit roars to life.
The 108-year-old organization, which comprises “film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals and academics,” also tapped the film’s stars, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, for top acting honors. Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”) and Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) won in the supporting categories.
Screenplay honors went to “The Disaster Artist” and “Phantom Thread,” while “Lady Bird” helmer Greta Gerwig won best director.
Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” won two prizes, for directorial debut and ensemble performance. “Call Me by Your Name” star Timothee Chalamet, meanwhile, added his second breakthrough performance award in as many days (after winning at the Gotham Awards Monday night).
The NBR awards gala will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York.
